Custom officers seize $1.5M worth of heroin, cocaine in Laredo

U. S. Customs & Border Protection officers seized heroin and cocaine valued at $1.52 million at the Laredo Port of Entry earlier this week, authorities confirmed.

The officers seized heroin and cocaine at the Lincoln-Juarez International Bridge on Monday, from a 1996 Chevy Tahoe that was being driven by a 50-year-old man from Iztapalapa, Mexico.

During the secondary inspection of the vehicle, the officers discovered 34 pounds of heroin and roughly one pound of cocaine.

The National Weather Service (NWS) cancelled a tornado warning that was issued for Washington D. C. and nearby counties.

The tornado warning along with flood watch was issued as a dangerous storm system rolled through the region. While the agency cancelled tornado warning, the flood watch remained in effect through 8:00 p. m. Wednesday.

The warning encompassed the City of Alexandria, Prince Georges, Fairfax, Arlington counties and the District of Columbia. The NWS cancelled the tornado warning after the thunderstorm weakened.

Three former El Paso police detectives on Wednesday testified that they never saw Daniel Villegas being forced or threatened into confessing murders of two people more than couple of decades ago.

Villegas, 37, was convicted in 1995 and sentenced to life imprisonment in the death case of Armando Lazo and Robert England in Northeast El Paso in 1993. Villegas has long been claiming that he was falsely convicted in the double murder case.

Southside Bancshares on Wednesday announced that its shareholders approved the issuance of shares of Southside common stock to stockholders of OmniAmerican Bancorp in connection with the proposed merger of a Southside subsidiary with OmniAmerican.

According to the proposed merger deal, Omega Merger Sub Inc., a subsidiary of Southside, will be merged with OmniAmerican. After the deal is finalized, OmniAmerican will be the surviving corporation.

The abortion clinic on the far west side of Fort Worth can again offer abortions, and other services like birth control and walk-in emergency contraception, after the country's apex court blocked key clauses of the state's new abortion law that forced clinics across the state to spend millions of dollars on hospital-level upgrades or shut down.

El Paso will spend than $6,000 to arrange a new computer and reconfigure desk at another seating place for Rep. Ann Morgan Lilly.

Lilly yesterday said that her request for a new computer and desk reconfiguration at a new seat during city council meetings was resolved without a debate on the matter.

Estimates suggest that the new arrangements will cost the city around $6,843. City spokesperson Juli Lozano said the money for fulfilling Lilly's request will come from the Public Educational & Governmental budget.
