Paris Houses Third Artificial Intelligence Lab of Facebook
In a bid to utilize the incredible talent of the researches in Paris, Facebook announced the opening of a new artificial intelligence (AI) here, the third one, as the social network aims to enlarge the scope of its futuristic projects.
Facebook's has two other AI research facilities, one at its Menlo Park headquarters in California and the other in New York City.
The Paris team will work in close collaboration with existing Facebook AI Research (FAIR) teams on several areas including image recognition, natural language processing, speech recognition, machine learning, live translating tools and much more.
Yann LeCun, French professor at New York University who heads the AI initiative of Facebook, informed that the new Paris lab will be the biggest artificial intelligence research facility in France and in continental Europe.
LeCun further stated that AI applications will help to eliminate spam and would eventually open up new advertising opportunities for Facebook.
It was reported that the new Paris AI lab presently has six researchers recruited from and the team will double by the end of the year.
The company has signed an agreement with French AI research institute INRIA and plans to hire research professionals, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in the future.
Mike Shroepfer, Facebook's chief technology officer stated," We chose Paris for the concentration of talent it has in terms of computing and artificial intelligence".
Facebook AI endeavours are targeted towards producing better products, adding new features and streamlining the network which stocks 350 million photos uploaded every day!
