Psychiatric patient escapes ambulance crew; killed in accident
A psychiatric patient being treated a San Antonio hospital was killed by a truck on a busy highway on Tuesday after he fled from the hospital as employees were trying to load him into an ambulance.
The man reportedly suffered a seizure at Laurel Ridge Treatment Center, which is located at the 17700 block of Corporate Woods Drive, just east of Redland Road. When hospital officials were trying to take him to another medical facility in an ambulance, he fled the ambulance crew and rushed towards the highway.
Hospital employees tried to catch up with him, but he soon reached busy Loop 1604 on north side of San Antonio, and made it across the westbound lanes, where several vehicles hit him and finally he was killed by a truck.
The driver of the truck stopped immediately to help, and the San Antonio Police Department has no plans to charge the truck driver.
Police spokesperson Douglas Greene confirmed the psychiatric patient's accidental death, but he declined to reveal the identity of the victim. He only said that the victim was in his 20s.
However, Bexar County medical examiner's office revealed that the victim was 29-year-old David Hartley Jr.
The incident, occurred just before 10 a. m., left traffic backed up for hours as police closed the North Side stretch of highway for investigation.
