New EPA rules to benefit residents, businesses in Maine

Experts have said that the new regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are expected to provide benefits to the residents and the businesses in the state of Maine.

The state is already seeing the effects of climate change including warming the air and water and changes in chemical composition. All these are contributing to severe weather in the state and across the region. Several key industries including fishing were affected by this year’s severe winter season. The state could face damage from coastal flooding, the decline of fisheries, longer allergy seasons and no mild summers and rise in chronic breathing ailments like asthma.

The EPA has proposed new rules, which is the most ambitious step to date to address the climate change issue. The new rules will regulate carbon pollution from power plants for the first time and the government is aiming to reduce emissions by 30 percent by year 2030.

The new Clean Power Plan is based on the concept of Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The authorities will also invest millions in energy efficiency and lowering power prices in New England and the mid-Atlantic States.
