For the very first time New Caledonian crows have been caught on camera for what they are famous for, using hook-shaped tools. The New Caledonian crows were caught on camera while they made hooked stick tools to reach food deep in tree crevices or hidden under leaf litter.
The species of crows found on New Caledonia, a forested island in the South Pacific, are quite famous for their making and using tools. This species fashion sticks into sharp instruments and use them to ‘fish’ for wood-boring larvae present in dead wood or tree trunks.
A tree that’s critical to Hawaii’s water supply, endangered native birds and Hawaiian cultural traditions such as hula, has been getting increasingly killed by a newly found fungus. Rapid ohia death named disease has hit the Big Island’s hundreds of thousands of ohia lehua trees.
It has reportedly affected 50% of the ohia trees throughout 6,000 acres of forest as of last year, but since then it’s believed to have spread more. So far, it’s been discovered mainly in Puna, but also in Kona and Kau. It hasn’t been found anywhere else worldwide.
A team of researchers, through a recently conducted study, found that humans are the only species that has the capability to remember events happened in past and mentally time travel.
The researchers for the study developed computer model to find evidence that could help them find an answer whether animals are capable to mental time travel or not. The model was developed by three scientists Prof. Markus Werning, Prof. Sen Cheng from the German Ruhr University Bochum and Prof. Thomas Suddendorf from University of Queenslands.
Super-strong yet light structural metal having high specific strength and modulus has been developed by a team of researchers from the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The new metal is made up of magnesium mixed with dense ceramic silicon carbide nanoparticles.
The new metal can be used to make light-weight airplanes, spacecraft and cars. It would also help to improve fuel efficiency, said the researchers. The researchers have found a new way to create the super-strong yet light-weight material.
A new study has revealed that asteroids are less dangerous to Earth as compared to centaurs, which are giant comets of 30-60 miles. The journal of the Royal Astronomical Society published the study suggesting that research must be undertaken to find centaurs outside our surroundings. Researchers revealed that areas surrounding the outer planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are home to centaurs, which circle around the sun in unstable orbits.
