Extra weight gain due to festive season is often followed by New Year resolutions to lose it. However, people need to understand that weight loss requires following certain specific methods, along with commitment and willpower. Weight maintenance can not only provide a healthier but also a longer life. Obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis, and fertility issues.
Body mass index (BMI) provides a perfect measure for majority of the population. BMI between 22.5 and 25 is considered healthiest, 30-35 BMI index reduces life expectancy by 2-4 years and 40-45 BMI index reduces it by 8-10 years. Vascular disease is among a major cause of death in obese people.
“People need to think about moderation all the time. Weight loss involves adjusting lifestyle, diet and calorie intake, whilst overcoming the psychological barriers too,” said Aisling Pigott, a spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association. She added that going on diet doesn’t mean ‘cutting out’ this food, and ‘never again’ having that food, instead enjoy a healthier food plan, which restricts certain types of food. It makes dieting much easier, she stated.
First of all, eating patterns should be stabilized. It indicates fixing time of eating, rather than eating at will. Hunger remains under control with appropriate food plan. Secondly, make small and easily attainable modifications in lifestyle to reduce weight. However, only realistic and attainable goals should be made.
